​Xi’s call to Singapore: a subtle ‘reminder’ about the South China Sea?

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday said China would work with Singapore to “overcome distractions” to safeguard regional stability, in remarks made to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong over a call. Some experts have interpreted the remarks as subtle “reminder” for Singapore to not take sides as Washington and Beijing spar over the South China Sea and other issues ranging from trade to technology to human rights. Asst Prof Dylan Loh from NTU said the call can be read as a “gentle reminder that Singapore-China relations are bigger” than what is happening in the disputed waterway.
