​Asean to tread carefully in US campaign to remove apps

The United States government's recent push to remove Chinese apps from American app stores is being watched in the region, for any signs Washington might pressure its Asian allies into imposing similar policies. Dylan Loh, an assistant professor of public policy and global affairs at NTU, said Asean's response to the US' call to ban Chinese apps was likely to be as lukewarm as its reaction to Pompeo's plea to back US stance on Beijing's claims in the disputed South China Sea. "This is another instance Southeast Asian countries do not want to see develop. It will be extremely difficult to find any sort of purchase within Southeast Asia because no one desires to antagonise China or be construed as having made its choice between the US and China,” he said.”
